Overview
Murang'a County Government has initiated the Water Connectivity Project to enhance access to clean and reliable water for its residents. As of March 2024, water coverage in the county stood at 60%, with disparities across different regions. To address this, the county allocated Sh35 million in the previous financial year, distributing Sh1 million per ward, leading to the drilling of 11 boreholes and the extension of water pipelines to underserved areas.

The main objective is to achieve 100% water coverage in Murang'a County by 2027, ensuring all households and institutions have access to safe and reliable water.
The project involves drilling new boreholes, extending pipeline networks, and upgrading existing water infrastructure. In the last financial year, 11 boreholes were drilled, and pipelines were extended to underserved areas, enhancing water accessibility.
Residents experience improved access to clean water, leading to better public health and sanitation. The project also reduces the time and effort spent fetching water, allowing community members to engage in other productive activities.
The project aims to provide sustainable water management, improve public health, enhance agricultural productivity, and boost local economic activities, contributing to the county's overall development.
The county's strategy includes collaborating with local water firms to improve and expand water infrastructure. For instance, the Murang’a Water and Sanitation Company (MUWASCO) has extended its services to Maragua town and its environs, increasing water coverage from 40% to over 60% by June 2024. Additionally, the Murang’a South Water and Sanitation Company (MUSWASCO) is implementing projects worth Sh2 billion, aiming to boost water coverage in Kandara, Kigumo, and Murang’a South sub-counties from 60% to approximately 90%.
