Murang'a County Government has launched a comprehensive Solarization Programme to transition county facilities to solar energy, aiming to reduce high electricity costs and promote sustainable practices. This initiative focuses on essential services, including health facilities and boreholes, to ensure uninterrupted operations and financial efficiency.
The main goal is to reduce electricity expenses by transitioning county facilities, such as health centers and boreholes, to solar energy, thereby promoting sustainability and financial efficiency.
The programme targets 70 health facilities and multiple boreholes across the county, including major hospitals like Murang’a County Referral and Maragua Level Four.
Residents will experience improved reliability in essential services, such as healthcare and water supply, due to reduced power outages. Cost savings from lower electricity bills can be redirected to other community development projects.
Long-term benefits include enhanced energy security, reduced operational costs for county facilities, environmental conservation through reduced carbon emissions, and the promotion of renewable energy adoption within the community.
In May 2024, the county began installing solar panels in 70 out of 157 health facilities, targeting significant monthly savings on electricity bills. Major hospitals such as Murang’a County Referral, Maragua Level Four, and the under-construction Kenneth Matiba Level Five are prioritized due to their substantial energy consumption, with monthly bills ranging from Sh400,000 to Sh1.2 million. Additionally, the programme extends to boreholes, with installations already completed in areas like Mumbu, Turuturu, Kabati, and others, ensuring continuous water supply and reducing operational costs.
