Overview

Located in the heart of Maragua Constituency, Murang’a County, the Gikono Waste Management Facility represents a groundbreaking shift in sustainable waste handling in Kenya. Situated on a 50-acre parcel of land, approximately 45 kilometers from Nairobi, this facility—officially handed over to the county by the National Government in April 2025—is only the second sanitary landfill in Sub-Saharan Africa, after South Africa. It is a strategic opportunity for investors keen on sustainable waste solutions, green energy, and circular economy ventures.

The facility is located at Gikono, within Maragua Constituency in Murang’a County. It’s approximately a 45 km drive from Nairobi, making it logistically convenient for accessing urban waste streams and transporting recycled products or energy outputs to markets.

The Gikono facility is a sanitary landfill—unlike common dumpsites. Instead of dumping waste on the surface, the landfill system involves burial and controlled decomposition, making it a cleaner, more sustainable solution. It’s the second such facility in Sub-Saharan Africa, following South Africa’s model, positioning Murang’a as a regional leader in sustainable waste management.

There are significant opportunities for:
a. Waste recycling plants
b. Organic fertilizer production
c. Green energy generation (e.g., biogas or waste-to-energy facilities)
These ventures align with the county’s vision of turning waste into economic value and environmental solutions.

The National Government transferred the facility to the Murang’a County Government in April 2025. With full county ownership and support, the site is now open to private-public partnerships, investor-led developments, and technology-based collaborations for sustainable waste utilization.

The Gikono Waste Management Facility is more than a landfill—it's an opportunity to build a sustainable future. With county support, proximity to Nairobi, and a foundation rooted in modern waste management practices, it’s the ideal platform for green investors and innovators. Whether in recycling, fertilizer, or energy production, Gikono offers fertile ground—both literally and figuratively—for impactful, profitable ventures.
