Murang’a Youth Service – First Graduation

Murang’a County Government led by H.E Governor Irungu Kang’ata has TODAY, July 27, 2024, at Ihura Stadium, presided over the first Graduation Ceremony of the first Cohort of over 700 Murang’a Youths under ‘Murang’a County Youth Service’- MYS Program . MYS is a Murang’a County Government Initiative launched in October 2023 to empower Young People across Murang’a with Short-term Employment after which they enroll at various Technical, Vocational Education and Training-TVET Colleges to be trained in short Technical Courses of their Choice, fully sponsored by the County Government.

With the Knowledge and hands-on Skills acquired during their Training at the TVETs, each of the 700+ MYS Graduates Today received Ksh. 15,000 Seed Capital from the County Government to Fund their Startups and Business Ideas. The 540 Trainees who passed their NITA Grade 3 Examinations were awarded with NITA Certicates. Kamukabi, Kangema and Gaitega TVETs were the best performing Institutions and they were awarded with Trophies. Governor Kang’ta has promised to exempt these Graduates from County Taxes in their New Business Ventures.

All this is in a bid to find a Solution to the growing Challenge of Youth bulge, Youth Unemployment, Hopelessness and the resultant Risks, the biggest being Alcoholism, Drug Abuse and Crime.

In a Ceremony graced by Equity Bank Founder and Chair of Murang’a County Budget and Economic Forum, Dr. Peter Munga, Murang’a MCAs, County Government Executive, and other invited Guests, H.E Governor Kang’ata emphasized that this ongoing Annual Program that has now seen 3 different Cohorts of 30 Youths from each of Murang’a’s 35 Wards enrolled, will be revamped to ensure that as many Youths as possible, equitably benefit from this Life-changing Program.

The Second Cohort of over 1000 Young People from all the 35 Wards in Murang’a County under this Program are currently enrolled at different Technical, Vocational Education and Training-TVET Colleges under the County Government, pursuing Technical Courses of their Choice, fully sponsored by Murang’a County Government. This, after completing their 2 Months of paid Community Service.

The Third Cohort is currently engaged in their first 2 Months Contract of paid Community Service, cleaning and garbage collection, Environmental Conservation, County Construction Works across Murang’a where they get a Stipend of Ksh.400 per Day under the 2 Months Community Service Contract. Ksh.100 from this Stipend goes to their Parents or Guardians of the Beneficiary in a bid to make them key motivators of their Son or Daughter in this Service. They will thereafter transit to TVET Colleges for another 3 Months of Technical Courses Training Program.

The County Government is also engaging Youths from Murang’a University and other Universities and Colleges across Kenya in Attachment and paid Internship Programs spread across the 10 Departments of Murang’a County Government, to ensure University and College Graduates get a Chance to acquire real Work Experience, to Kick-start their various Professions.

The Vision of Murang’a County Youth Service Policy and Programs is to remove Barriers to maximizing Youth Productivity so as to equitably offer Young People an Opportunity to productively participate in Development at a Personal, Economic and Socio-economic Level.

The County Government in conjunction with the County Assembly is seeking to establish a County Youth Fund in order to sustainably support MYS Graduates and fund all Programs under Murang’a County Youth Service. This Policy seeks to not only Safeguard the Rights of the Youth but to also help them understand and fulfill their Responsibilities for the Development of our Society.
