Murang’a county Government, Health Department with Nutrition International (NI) commemorate World Prematurity Day

Earlier this week Murang’a county Government, Health Department in Partnership with Nutrition International (NI) commemorated World Prematurity Day. This Day is meant to sensitize the public and various stakeholders on challenges and burden of pre-term births at a Global scale.

Health Practitioners from Murang’a County Referral Hospital (MCRH) were sensitized on the Management of Pre-term babies with breathing difficulties that is management of Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

A Procession was conducted across Murang’a town where the public was sensitized on prevention of prematurity births and quality care offered to preterm babies. Later, a celebration at the Hospital followed where the Newborn and Child Health Focal Person and other Health Workers in the department appreciated the support from County Government, particularly procurement of medical equipment and Afya KE which has made Documentation and Patients care efficient.

The County Government Maternal Programme which is aimed at improving Ante Natal Care (ANC) attendance, will aid in reduction of pregnancy complications, including preterm births.

Among the invited guests were survivors who were born before term and are now healthy babies together with their parents where they shared success Maternal stories.

The Department of Health has a plan on reducing Neonatal and Perinatal deaths related to prematurity.

In attendance: Deputy County Director Health Dr. Kairo Kimende, County Nutrition Coordinator Madam Nancy Mwangi, NI-Murang’a County Project Coordinator Ms. Purity Gitonga, Nutrition International County Programs Coordinator Madam Joan Irungu, Child Health Focal Person Madam Irene Mucheru and Nurture First Program, Officer Elizabeth Muiruri.
