Murang’a County Government Hosts Birth Companion End-Line Dissemination Meeting

The Murang’a County Health Department, in collaboration with key stakeholders, today hosted the Birth Companion End-Line Dissemination Meeting. The Birth Companion initiative, introduced in Murang’a County through Jhpiego Kenya’s ANC PNC Research Collective (ARC) project in collaboration with ICHR-K, aligns with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommendation to enhance the childbirth experience for mothers globally by having a birth companion.

Launched in January 2023 and implemented across 12 healthcare facilities, the program has significantly improved maternal health outcomes. Results show increased overall satisfaction in the birthing experience, healthier newborns, shorter labor durations, reduced need for cesarean sections, and a decrease in reliance on pain medication.

The meeting brought together key partners, including the National Government, Jhpiego,ICHR-K, Jacaranda Health, and Marie Stopes, to share insights from the intervention and explore strategies to expand Birth Companion coverage across the county.

The session was presided over by the Chief Officer of Health, Isaac Kangara, and attended by Director of Health, Dr. Mburu, alongside representatives from various program partners.

This collaborative effort underscores the growing impact of the Birth Companion initiative on maternal care in Murang’a County and the potential for broader adoption across other regions.
