Recovered Alcoholic Pass Out ceremony At General Ihura Stadium

alcoholicsOn 10th December 2015 Murang'a County Governor Mwangi Wa Iria  presided over a pass out ceremony for 800 recovered alcoholic addicts at the General Ihura Stadium.The event was a culmination of an intensive four months rehabilitation program geared towards rescuing these men and women from the grinding jaws of alcoholism.
A total of 1200 addicts had been enlisted at the makeshift camp in Ihura Stadium but after screening a number of them were released from the camp having recovered within a span of few days.With the swelling numbers the Camp was relocated to a permanent site in Kambirwa; Mbiri Ward.The recovered addicts were put on psychological counseling and healthcare in order to nurse alcoholic and drug abuse ailments that they bore.
The Governor asserted that he was appealed and humbled to see the reunion of more than twenty families that had broken up owing to domestic violence attributed by alcoholism.
Conscious of the fact that a well thought of post-rehabilitation strategy is pivotal in ensuring that the 1000 constituents do not lose track again and cave in alcoholism again; the People's Government of Murang'a County has rolled out the below outlined empowerment plan as highlighted by the Governor.
The former addicts who were in various professional occupations such as teaching and disciplined forces would  be absorbed in their professions for a short stint of time as they get gauged on their capacity to be mainstreamed back to their professions on a permanent basis.The County Government would later negotiate with agencies such as TSC, Ministry of Interior and corporate entities towards securing full time employment for these people.
Some of the recovered alcoholic addicts with interest in dairy farming were given 55 dairy cows to be able to undertake dairy farming.A section of the former addicts were also issued with letters to get enlisted in various polytechnics in Murang'a County to acquire technical skills on areas such as carpentry, Masonry, plumbing among others.
Those that were in informal industry such as hair & beauty, shoe making, carpentry and masonry were equipped with working tools and equipment to aid them in reverting back gainful ventures.

A Cooperative entity bearing the name 'KAA SOBER SACCO' with primary branches across the Sub-Counties has been instituted towards helping the recovered addicts pool resources,make savings and benefit from friendly credit services as they rebuild their lives.
The empowerment program also encompasses other approaches tailored towards diverse needs of the reformed addicts with an intention of according each of the now changed addicts a source of livelihood.
Towards sustaining the fight against lethal brews the Governor flagged off three three vehicles to be used by Liquor Control Unit in rolling out consistent crackdown against illicit liquour.The operation will be run in conjunction with the National Government Security agencies in Murang'a County.
The Governor further revealed that the People's Government of Murang'a County has closed down 900 bars in Murang'a for the last five months and that all wines and spirit vending joints have also been shut down.
On his own behalf and on behalf of the people of Murang'a Wa Iria thanked President Uhuru Kenyatta for ordering the crackdown on illicit brew; the idea of this rehabilitation camp was sired from the President's herald.
To the relatives and friends of these young men and women the Governor extended his regards for the aid offered by way of mobilization and persuading their loved ones to get enlisted at the Camp.He further urged the relatives and friends to show love and support to these brothers and assist in their reintegration to the society.
Governor Wa Iria also tendered gratitudes to the medics,psychological counsellors,religious leaders and the 'KAA SOBER FOUNDATION' officials for their overwhelming commitment towards according a new lease of life to our brothers and sisters.
The Governor in addition appreciated the efforts of v various agencies of the National Government such as NYS and the office of the County Commissioner that offered pertinent support on this course by way of physical utilities.
The reformed addicts were also hailed for heeding to the rehabilitation call and taking the courageous step of getting enlisted at the Murang'a County Drugs and Alcoholic Rehabilitation Camp.
The rehabilitation program will resume in early 2016 where the second batch of alcoholic addicts will be admitted; registration will commence in the coming few days.The registration exercise will be conducted at our former makeshift camp in Ihura Stadium.

The young men underwent comprehensive tutoring on areas such as responsible sexual behavior,spiritual growth, career choices and development drug and substance abuse, personal hygiene,radicalization and peer influence, progressive cultural values and others.
Governor Wa Iria further extended his regards to the parents and guardians for allowing their children to be under the care of the People's Government of Murang'a County throughout this program.The Couty boss also tender gratitudes to the medics for the health services offered, local leaders for mobilization and coordination,religious leaders,administrators in the various schools that were used as initiation centers and everyone else who played a role towards the success of this program.
The Governor also lauded the young men for heeding to the call on culturally progressive mode of rite of passage and their composure during this process.
The County Government is set to run a continuous monitoring and follow up on the areas where these boys will be absorbed into and precisely secondary and polytechnic institutions of learning will be done to ensure that they don't stray up.
In a concluding remark Governor Wa Iria exuded hope that this and future generations of a boy child in Murang'a County will lead an illustration of socio-political and economic progress.

Governor Mwangi wa Iria joins persons with disabilities

On 3rd December Governor Mwangi Wa Iria joined the persons with disabilities drawn across the eight Sub-Counties for a consultative forum during the United Nations Day for Persons with Disabilities at the General Ihura stadium.The day offers an opportunity to reflect and promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity,rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
In addition to the programs that the County Government has rolled out in empowering the persons with disabilities the Governor asserted that  a profiling program will be rolled out with an aim of identifying the unique needs of persons with diverse disabilities for proper address.The persons with disabilities bill is about to be wound up into law for effective service to the people with disabilities to address areas such as special education and business.The Governor further said that a comprehensive program that entails giving aid kits and equipments that render ability to these people has been executed and so far a total of 2400 persons with disability have benefited from this program since its initiation in 2014.This continuos program also seeks to render mobility with ease to all the persons with disability in Murang'a County.As part of this program; the Governor  gave artificial disability tools to 600 persons that included wheelchairs, crutches, visual walking sticks and others.
A fraction of Commercial stalls that are set for construction by the County Government will also be reserved for the persons with disabilities.
Towards ensuring affordable and proper healthcare for these persons; the County Government will partner with NHIF on a sponsored medical scheme.The Governor also directed the health department on conducting routine health assessment for these persons at no charges.
A special bursary kitty to cater for the persons with disabilities is set up for institution and will be availed for disbursement as schools reopen in January 2016.
The Governor appealed to the guardians tending to persons with disabilities to seek enlisting at the department of County Social Services Department where they will also register the nature of aid that these people require.
Governor Wa Iria also extended gratitudes to the National Council for Persons with disabilities for being strategic partners in addressing the plight of persons with special needs.

FREE MALE INITIATION AND COUNSELING PROGRAM
The County Government of Murang'a under the leadership of Governor Mwangi Wa Iria is rolling out a circumcision program for young boys as a way of addressing the plight of the boy child.The program is being ran by the County Government departments of health, social services and culture.

The initiation program will entail circumcision,cultural education and spiritual guidance.Mentorship by professionals and leaders  in various fields such as career development,business,agriculture and health will also be done.In the fight against drug abuse and alcoholism the boys will be taken through extensive guidance and counseling sessions in ensuring that upon transition into adulthood they don't fall prey to this vice.
The registration for this program is on going in the below centers at no charges.

Gatanga Sub-County - Kirwara Boys'
Kandara Sub-County - St. Peter's Gakarara.
Maragua Sub-County -Murang'a Teachers College and Kaharo Secondary School.
Kigumo   Sub-County -Njiris High School.
Kiharu     Sub-County -Vidhu Ramji Secondary School.
Kahuro    Sub-County - Kiumu Primary School.
Kangema/Mathioya Sub-Counties - Michuki Technical Training Institute.

Upon registration, the boys will report on Sunday 29/11/2015 at 10:00 am in the above mentioned centers accompanied by a male guardian (Father, elder brother, uncle or an older male friend).
Meals, accommodation, counseling, circumcision and other expenses will be catered for by the County Government of Murang'a.
As an agent of social order the County Government is taking this rite of passage to inculcate and instill  ideals to the Muranga's future.This in line with the traditions though with a modern touch on realities of inclusivity, tolerance and mental reset for future prosperity.
This program will aid in moulding our young boys into great men in future.

Murang'a County  bagged two awards during the 2015 Governors' Award at the Intercontinental Hotel on 19th November 2015.Agriculture, food security and Education are the categories whose awards went to Murang'a County. 

The agriculture and food security award can be attributed to various revolutionary agricultural programs that the County Government has rolled out in dairy farming, horticulture and revival of cash crop farming.In dairy farming the County Government has subsidized the cost of artificial insemination in ensuring farmers get the right and quality breeds with massive milk production capacity.The roll out of this program the reduction cost of AI services from Kshs 1500 to Kshs 600 and 500 for Services offered at individual farmyards and designated cattle clutch sheds respectively.The County Government has also established Murang'a County Creameries(MCC) in an approach geared towards fetching more returns from dairy farming.In this approach thirty five (35) milk cooling plants have been instituted across the wards in Murang'a County in enhancing value addition.Construction of a milk processing plant at Maragua a Town courtesy of the County Government is set for completion in the coming few months; upon completion the factory with process a variety of milk products and break the intermediary costs incurred by the farmers thus reaping more returns.Its worth noting that a liter of milk now sells at Ksh. 35 up from as little as Kshs 18     Before the initiation of this dairy project.

The County Government has also initiated a irrigation farming projects in Kandara knows as AJIBIKA 1 and similar projects are set for execution in the other Sub-Counties.

 

County Government Comprehensive Coffee Development Project popularly known as 'Kahawa bora initiative'  Implementation that seeks to revive coffee farming is underway; this program entails giving farmers batian coffee trees which is more productive than the ordinary SL coffee in addition to being resistant to coffee berry diseases.To this far 3Million batian coffee trees have been given out and the first has already been picked processing this year.This approach is geared towards boosting the volume of production.The County Government has also employed agronomic practices to increase production per tree.The coffee farmers union was restructured in order to roll out a proper management plan and get rid of scandalized engagements that would make farmers incur losses.An indicator on the gains that this program has hatched  has seen the cherry production in the county increase from 14,719,429 kg in 2011/12 to 24,133,321 kg in 2013/14.These are some of the programs being undertaken to improve agriculture in Murang'a County.

 

The award on Education is rooted on a visionary and comprehensive education program known as 'Murang'a Child Can' Government's that is geared towards boosting education standards in Murang'a County.This program has seen establishment of two low cost primary boarding schools in every Sub-County.This seeks to enable parents from relatively humble background willing to enroll their children in boarding do so at an affordable and subsidized cost.An annual bursary kitty of 70Million shillings for needy students in secondary and tertiary institutions of learning has also been established.The County Government also funds standard end term examination in primary and secondary schools.Improvement of physical infrastructure in learning institutions is also encompassed in this approach in addition to Mentorship and motivation programs.

 

The awards were tendered on a number of Governors who emerged best in various categories.Toyota KENYA, CMC, Royal Media Services, Jambo Pay, KNH, LIQUID TELKOM are part of the corporate entities which sponsored these awards.

 

Addressing the congregation after receiving the awards Governor Mwangi Wa Iria dedicated the awards to the people of Murang'a and thanked them for the resounding support they have accorded his government in the implementation of the development agenda.

COFFEE REVIVAL

( KAHAWA BORA INITIATIVE)

coffeeCoffee farming is one of the prima commercial agricultural undertaking accounting for an estimated 70,000 households.The volume of coffee production was on a decline trend for the last two decades and this called for a well thought of strategy to address the factors that brought fourth this decline.

To fetch farms inputs at reasonable rates the County Government rolled out a collective farm inputs purchase plan and as we speak the County Government is offering quality farmyard manure at subsidized prices to coffee farmers.This farmyard manure will address the ever escalating soil alkalinity which has consistently rendered the soil infertile.This farmyard manure is available in the coffee factories and is being offered at a reasonable and subsidized price.

In revitalizing extension services to farmers the County Government has employed a coffee officer in every Sub-County tasked with championing coffee development and educating farmers.

The County Government has also provided each Coffee Cooperative Society with an agricultural officer to offer necessarily expertise and ensure proper production oriented farming methods.

On behalf of the farmers the Murang'a County Government is pursuing finance partnership to avail accessible, affordable and timely credit services which is pertinent in addressing resources constrains for a genre of farming that is on the route to revival.

It's worth noting that the County Government Comprehensive Coffee Development Project has seen the cherry production in the county increase from 14,719,429 kg in 2011/12 to 24,133,321 kg in 2013/14.

The County Government of Murang'a has also presided over the restructuring of the coffee farmers union owing to mismanagement that has perennially incurred loses to farmers.

This coffee improvement program is a proposed five-year project geared towards uplifting the status of coffee farming and turning into a major income earner via targeted interventions across the whole coffee value chain.Below are the enumerated key objectives entailed in this program. 

1. Improve the quality of coffee produced by small scale farmers.

2. Boost the quantity of coffee produced by small scale farmers.

3. Replace the old and coffee prone coffee trees with the advanced high yielding varieties.
