The Government of Murang'a County

Mashujaa Day Speech

GOVERNOR MWANGI WA IRIA MASHUJAA DAY CELEBRATIONS AT MUMBI GROUNDS ON 20th OCT 2015.

Fellow citizens and constituents of Murang'a am humbled to join you today for the 52nd Mashujaa fete. This day marks an auspicious chapter in the history of our country where heroes and heroines put their lives on the line for the prosperity of this nation away from the oppressive and injustice chains of colonialism.

Mashujaa day offers us with an opportunity to reflect on the virtues of self-sacrifice and patriotism in passing on the dream that the courageous men and women we are paying tribute to had conceptualized. The dream of a country with freedom, unity, democracy, security, good health and other values that are pillars of a Country that is moving forward.Theirs was politics anchored on the voice of reason and devotion to serving humanity.

In an era of a new political dispensation and precisely with devolved governance the surest way to honor our heroes is ensuring that political power and economic resources have been dispersed to Kenyans at grass roots irrespective of social status, age and political affiliation.

Am pleased to highlight that as a County we have made tremendous strides for the short stint that the County Government has been in operation.

In ensuring proper healthcare to the people of Murang'a my government has procured sixteen ambulances to address rapid and emergency health situations.A renal unit has also been established at the Murang'a Referal Hospital and equipped with eight dialysis machines. The Kirwara Sub-County hospital is also undergoing renovation to accord it a facelift and boost patients handling capacity. Murang'a County Government has also established an Eye and Dental Hospital at Kenol to offer high quality optical and dental healthcare. This facility is set to be launched in the coming few weeks.
The Kambirwa Health Centre is set to be upgraded into a post-modern orthopedic centre. The County Government has also rolled out a plan that encompasses three thousand community health volunteers in addressing health issues at the lowest levels.

In availing an improved infrastructure that is pertinent for economic growth we have opened new feeder roads extending to 450kilometres. 350 Kilometres of feeder roads have been gravelled in addition to grading 4500 Kilometres of access roads.

The County Government has also rolled out a robust plan to harness access to the household to clean and sufficient domestic water and to this far 36 water projects have been rolled to connect an estimated 100,000 constituents with 10,000 pipes.

In improving dairy farming the County Government has rolled out value addition approaches and instituted 35 milk coolers in ensuring farmers reap more from dairy products.A milk processing plant has also been established at Maragua and is set to open up for operation soon.Milk prices have drastically escalated with a liter of milk going for 35Ksh up from a mere 18Kshs. In ensuring affordable access to hybrid cattle the County Government is offering free AI services to dairy farmers whose cows are inseminated at the designated crutch sheds and a subsidized fee of 600Ksh for the farmers who seek the services at the farmyards.

A coffee revival plan that entails giving farmers hybrid batian coffee trees, agronomic practices to improve coffee farming, overhauling the management of coffee union to address perennial graft that has demoralized farmers, offering subsidized farmyard manure and offering extension services to farmers is being executed.A testimony to this is the increase in coffee production by 9Million kilograms over the last two years. Our projection is to hit an annual coffee production of not less than 240Million kilograms.

Nine open air markets have undergone renovation to avail a conducive business environment in addition to erection of flood lights in various towns.

Towards securing the future of our children through education my government has instituted an annual 70Million shillings bursary kitty to aid in the payment of fees for needy students in tertiary and secondary institutions of learning. The County Government also sponsors end term and mocks examinations for all primary and secondary schools respectively in Murang'a.Two low cost primary boarding schools have also been established in every Sub-County in improving enabling parents who wish to enroll their children in boarding schools to do so at an affordable cost.

The above highlighted initiatives are part of the comprehensive development scheme in Murang'a County which has been seen to realization through concerted efforts by all players in Murang'a. I also urge the people of Murang'a not to be embroiled in political sideshows and instead remain focussed on the development agenda as it has been for the last two and a half years.

Happy Mashujaa Day and let's work together for a better Murang'a.
God bless Murang'a County.
