World Cooperative day 2015 celebration



 Governor Mwangi Wa Iria on Saturday 4th July joined Cooperative Society members from Murang’a County in commemorating the 93rd World Cooperative Day at Gakoigo Grounds. The event saw various cooperatives from the county showcase their diverse products and interact with the members of the public. Murang’a County boasts of 257 cooperatives with 500, 007 members out of a total population of 1 million people. Since 600, 000 residents of Murang’a are aged over 18 years and therefore eligible for membership only 99,993 are not members and should register as soon as possible, the Governor said. During the celebrations, speakers highlighted the milestones achieved in the county especially in the dairy and microfinance sectors. The Commissioner of Cooperatives Madam Josephine also brought into focus the major challenges facing cooperatives in the county with hostility and interference by non-members of cooperatives emerging as the most prevalent.  The Governor lauded the success of the Dairy cooperatives and committed to transforming the coffee sector saying plans were already under way. Various cooperatives were awarded for their outstanding performance during the last year.
